What Washer Capacity Should You Choose?

content

A washer’s capacity determines how much laundry you can wash in a single cycle. The right size mainly depends on how many people live in your home and the types of items you wash regularly.

For a single person or a couple, a washer with a capacity of about 4.5 to 5.0 cu. ft. is usually enough for everyday clothing, towels and bed sheets.

In a household of three to four people, many families choose a capacity between 5.2 and 5.5 cu. ft., which allows you to wash a large load of clothes or several thick towels in one cycle.

Washers with 5.5 to 6 cu. ft. and more provide even more space for bulky loads. They can handle items such as a comforter, blankets or several family loads of laundry without requiring multiple cycles.

Depending on your laundry habits, certain features can make laundry day much easier.

Delay start allows you to schedule when the wash cycle begins. This can be useful if you want to avoid peak electricity hours or prefer the cycle to finish when you return home.

Smart sensors automatically adjust the amount of water based on the size of the load. This helps deliver an efficient wash without using more water than necessary.

Child lock prevents settings from being changed during the cycle and adds an extra level of safety when young children are nearby.

Finally, the ENERGY STAR® certification indicates that the appliance is designed to use less energy and water, which can help reduce long-term operating costs.

Washers FAQ

How do you choose between a front load washer and a top load washer?

The choice mainly depends on your available space and your laundry routine. Front load washers can be stacked with a dryer, which helps save space. Top load models provide direct access to the drum and may be more convenient in narrower laundry rooms.

What is the difference between a washer with an agitator and one without?

Washers with an agitator use a central column that moves clothes vigorously during the wash cycle. Models without an agitator use a wash plate and drum movements to circulate water and detergent through fabrics, leaving more space inside the drum for larger loads.

Do front load washers take up more space?

Not necessarily. Even though the door opens from the front, many models can be stacked with a dryer, which can actually save floor space in a smaller laundry room.

Can all washers be stacked with a dryer?

Not all washers are designed to be stacked. In most cases, only certain compatible front load washers can be installed under a dryer, and the installation usually requires a manufacturer-approved stacking kit to secure both appliances. Before stacking appliances, it’s important to verify compatibility and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. Using appliances that are not designed to be stacked may cause vibration, misalignment or potential safety issues.
